Staying alive in Diablo 4 is less about stacking one huge Life number and more about giving every hit somewhere else to go first. You'll notice the difference fast in Nightmare Dungeons: two players can face the same elite pack, yet one gets dropped in seconds while the other keeps moving. Good D4 items can help, but the real value comes from how Armor, resistances, Barriers, and Life support each other when the screen gets messy.
Barrier changes how you take risks

Barrier is often the part players underestimate. It isn't just extra health with a different colour. It's a temporary pool placed over your Life, so damage chews through that shield before it starts cutting into your actual health. That gives you room to stay close, finish a channelled skill, or revive a teammate without panicking. A build that can refresh Barrier regularly feels far steadier than one that only relies on potions. The trick is timing. Generating a Barrier after you've already taken a heavy hit is useful, sure, but getting one up before a dangerous pull is much better.

Mitigation makes every shield last longer

Barrier works best when incoming damage has already been trimmed down. That's where Armor, elemental resistances, and Damage Reduction affixes earn their place. Think of mitigation as the bouncer at the door. It cuts down the hit before Barrier has to deal with it. If a large fire blast lands against poor resistance, your Barrier can disappear in one go. With solid resistance and sensible Damage Reduction, that same Barrier may survive several attacks. You don't need to chase every defensive stat blindly, though. Look at the damage types and situations that are actually killing your character.

A quick look at the defensive layers

Layer | Main job | What happens when it is weak.
Armor and Resistances | Reduce physical or elemental damage | Big hits arrive almost untouched.
Damage Reduction | Lowers damage in specific conditions | Elites, crowd control, or close-range fights become risky.
Barrier | Absorbs reduced damage before Life | Your Life starts falling during every exchange.
Life | Keeps you alive after everything else is spent | There's little room to recover from mistakes.

Life still matters, just not on its own

Life is the layer you never want to spend carelessly. Once Barrier is gone and mitigation has done all it can, your health pool is what keeps a bad moment from becoming a death screen. A healthy amount of Life also makes healing, fortify effects, and emergency potions feel more reliable. Still, adding Life while ignoring your other defences can leave a build feeling oddly fragile. It's like bringing a bigger bucket into a storm without fixing the roof.

Build for the fights you actually play

A durable character usually has a clear plan: reduce the hit, let Barrier take the first bite, then preserve Life for the damage that slips through. Test that plan in real content rather than judging it from a stat sheet. If you keep dying while crowd controlled, add protection for that problem. If elemental bursts are the issue, check resistance caps. When choosing cheap diablo 4 gear, it's worth looking for pieces that strengthen the layer your build is missing, not just the item with the biggest Life roll.
